Amazon’s Alexa is capable of speaking in multiple accents and languages. Some people may prefer a different accent for their Alexa over another. For instance, one person may prefer an English speaking Alexa with a United Kingdom accent.
There are a total of 4 languages to choose from including Japanese, German, French, and English. Of the 4 languages, only English and French have multiple accents to choose from.
There are a total of 5 different English accents that can be chosen from including United State English, Canadian English, Indian English, Australian/New Zealand English, and United Kingdom English.
French has 2 accents to choose from, standard French and Canadian French.
In this article, we will be covering each step of the process for changing Alexa’s voice
Step 1: Open/Download Alexa App
First, you must have the Amazon Alexa app. This app can be downloaded for free on Android’s Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
Once the Alexa app is downloaded, you will be prompted to login in.
Step 2: Go To Settings
Once the Alexa app is opened and set up, tap the 3 lines in the upper left corner.
A menu will appear on the left side of the screen. At the bottom of the menu will be a settings buttons tap it.
Step 3: Choose Device
Once you are in the settings menu, there will be a button second from the top that reads “Device Settings” tap it.
After tapping Device Settings you will be given a list of which Echo devices you would like to choose from. Choose the corresponding device that you wish to change the voice of.
Step 4: Choose Voice or Language
After choosing the correct device, scroll down to the language option which will be located fourth from the bottom.
Once inside the language menu, there will be a total of 9 options to choose from. Choose whichever language or accent you’d like Alexa to speak in.
When tapping a language or accent that is different from the language or accent that is registered to your Amazon account, you will be prompted with a warning.
“The selected language does not match your Amazon Account and is not fully supported in your country. If you make this change, some Alexa capabilities, skills, music and content may be unavailable.”
To maximize your Alexa experience we strongly recommend you to use the same language or accent that is registered to your Amazon account. Changing this language or accent may hinder Alexa’s full potential.
As much we’d prefer to change our Alexa to United Kingdom English, we’ve stuck with American English to make sure our Alexa can be used to its full potential.
In the future, we would like to see Amazon change this, making it possible to use an accent without hindering Alexa’s abilities. Also, a male voice option would be welcomed as well.
