Gardena R80 Li
About the Gardena R80 Li
Gardena’s R80 Li is not a new product. In fact, Gardena has announced and rolled out their new line of Sileno robot mowers (which are incredibly hard to purchase online).
The new Sileno line looks promising and seems to be packed with brand-new technology – a smart phone app for example.
Worth researching, but we’ll still recommend their older, but still great, R80Li robot.
The R80Li is affordable, as far as robot lawn mowers go.
It comes with great features such as:
- Adjustable Cutting Height
- Mowing Time and Day Schedule
- Anti-theft Protection
- Simple, intuitive Control Panel
- Easy-to-place Boundary Wire
- Weather-proof Build
- Lithium-ion Battery
But let’s get on to what’s really important – How does it cut?
We’re pretty impressed with the Gardena R80Li’s performance.
Thanks to the adjustable mowing height, you can choose how high or low to cut your grass, and the Gardena will make it so.
While it can’t cut a particularly huge piece of land (0.173 acres), it is a great option for a small-to-mid size yard.
And what’s more, it can return to the charger, fully charge, and then return to cutting.
Finally, it really is simple to install and get running, which is a huge bonus because we all know how difficult some of these robot devices can be to actually operate.
The Gardena is by no means a top-of-the-line robot lawn mower, but for the price it won’t let you down.
When it comes to robot lawn mowers, the term ‘Budget’ is relative.
These are expensive machines.
But the Gardena R80 Li is an incredible entry point to those looking for a robot lawn mower. Its price is on the lower end, and Gardena provides a reliable, and feature-heavy product.
As mentioned before, Gardena has just rolled out a new line of robot lawn mowers, so the price of this model will likely drop further as it is phased out.
The Gardena R80Li is a surprisingly effective robot, and our choice for “Best Budget” robot lawn mower.
About the Robomow RC306
Robomow is one of the few companies in the robot mower industry that consistently updates their product line, and they always seem to be improving.
The Robomow RC306 is one of their more discreet options.
Intended for lawns up to 1/8th of an acre, this robot comes packed with great features and performance.
The best feature with Robomow’s devices is their auto-stop sensors. Essentially, whenever anyone approaches the device, the mower shuts off.
While we still advise caution around any lawn mower, this is definitely a function that eases the stress of having small children or pets around a robot mower.
Robomow devices also come with smartphone app functionality, allowing for customization of how often the robot will operate, what conditions (humidity) it will be allowed to operate under, and even allow for up to three designated zones for individual mowing.
Additional features include auto-sensors to avoid obstacles, a lift sensor, emergency stop button, as well as child and PIN locks for the device.
The RC306 has adjustable mowing heights, edge cutting, and can climb slopes up to 36o, making it a great option for non-flat yards.
Finally, installation of a border wire keeps the device within a space of your choosing.
The Robomow RC306 is a solid, somewhat affordable option for a smaller yard.
Robomow’s mowers are definitely reliable, and their cutting performance is sure to leave your yard well-groomed.
The only downsides to this product are its small coverage area and louder sound level. While the noise isn’t exactly obnoxious, Robomow’s mowers do emit more noise than other options on this list.
While it is a superior product to the Gardena R80Li, it also covers a smaller area and is generally more expensive.
Overall, this is a solid machine, but fits into a small niche of use due to its small coverage area.
About the Robomow RS630
The Robomow RS630 is a large leap in cost from the prior RC306 model, but it also comes packed with much more functionality.
The RS630 can mow up to 3/4 acre, a huge increase in coverage area from the RC306.
It has the same auto-stop sensor features as the other Robomow bot, so Robomow’s safety is once again a huge positive.
The new 2019 model of the RS630 also comes with a new chassis and GPS connectivity for increased geo-tracking – a huge feature in case of theft.
It has many of the same great features we loved in the RC306, such as 36o slope climbing, 3 zone configurations, edge cutting, adjustable mowing height, as well as the same obstacle and lift sensors.
Additionally, it has the same child and PIN locks, smartphone app connectivity, and comes with the border wire installation kit.
The Robomow RS630 really isn’t that different from the RC306, but it definitely justifies the increased price thanks to its vastly improved coverage area.
Robomow is a reliable brand with a great product, and we really don’t have too many negative things to say about either of the products we reviewed.
The only downsides to the RS630 are, once again, its louder noise level compared to other brands, and its relatively large cost.
If you think the RS630 is the robot mower for you, Home Depot currently has stock, and their web page has some great video links detailing the RS630’s setup, use, and features.

About the Husqvarna AM315
Husqvarna is a well-known manufacturer of lawn care and outdoor accessories, and their line of robot mowers are some of the best in the business.
The AM315 is an exceptional entry product for those looking for a robot mower, thanks to its affordable price, exceptional performance and intuitive features.
It is intended for yards up to 0.4 acres.
Cutting height is adjustable between 0.8 and 2.4 inches, and the mower can cut on slopes up to 40%.
It shares some other similar features with Robomow’s devices, such as:
- Guide wire that functions essentially the same as the border wire
- Weather resistant robot, capable of mowing in rain
- Lift sensors
- PIN locks
- Scheduling options
- Graphic menu display
- Smartphone app connectivity
- Charge and resume
However, Husqvarna’s robot mower has some great additional features.
For example, spot cleaning of a particularly overgrown patch of grass.
A patented weather timer that maximizes mowing time during periods of extreme grass growth and minimizing in extremely dry weather.
And an automatic slim passage handling system that can navigate tricky terrain.
The Husqvarna AM315 really benefits from its parent company’s expertise in the mowing field, so-to-speak, delivering an incredibly good looking and even cut across your yard.
The Husqvarna AM315 is not intended for huge yards, but it definitely succeeds at being a great option for small to mid-size yards.
The Husqvarna mowers are very quiet, and the cut they give your yard is consistent and clean.
Given all of this, the Husqvarna is definitely our “Best Value” option, thanks to its great price point and all of its great features.
Husqvarna Automower 430X
About the Husqvarna 430X
Husqvarna has already shown its worth with the AM315 robot mower, but it’s the Husqvarna 430X that really blew us away.
This robot mower is a great example of a newer technology that is really starting to improve and revolutionize.
The 430X comes with all of Husqvarna’s great features and introduces some amazing new functions.
Some of the new functions that most excite us are – Amazon Alexa and Google Home support, meaning your robot can be sent to mow by a simple voice command.
LED headlights that give better visibility during early morning or later day mows, as well as serving as a visual indicator of any malfunction by way of flashing.
But our personal favorite new feature is the GPS assisted navigation. This is pretty revolutionary for robot mowers and gives a glimpse into what might be possible in the future.
The way it works is by using the onboard GPS, in assistance with the installed boundary wires, to create a smart map of the mowing area. This eliminates the randomness from the mowing path, and ensures a clean, even cut across your entire yard.
In addition to these great features the 430X also has all the same features as the AM315:
- Weather timer
- Auto passage handling
- Slopes up to 45% (5% more than AM315)
- Charge and resume
- 5 remote start points
- Spiral spot cutting
- Mowing height adjustment
- & more!
While the features are great, the best thing about the 430X is its large coverage area, and silent operation.
The 430X can mow up to 0.8 acres and operates at a very quiet 58 dB.
This is a great alternative to waking up and pushing a mower around on a weekend, and your lawn will look just as good as if you did!
The Husqvarna 430X is a fantastic robot device.
It’s understandable that many buyers are cautious about shelling out upwards of $1000 on a robot vacuum (in this case, upwards of $2000), but there really is nothing to fear when it comes to the 430X.
Online reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and Husqvarna’s customer service and warranty programs are all-encompassing.
The performance of the robot mower, as well as the ease of use and set-up, make this an incredibly worthwhile purchase.
Remarkably, this isn’t actually the very best robot mower out there, but it is our “Best Overall” pick due to its great price point, incredible performance, and its availability on sites like Amazon.

Husqvarna Automower 450XH
About the Husqvarna 450XH
Introducing the very best overall robot mower on the market – the Husqvarna Automower 450XH.
This is a brand-new model, and basically the improved version of the 430X.
For all intents and purposes, this is a bigger version of the 430X that can cover more ground – up to a massive 1.25 acres!
There isn’t much more to add, but if you want all that the 430X offers, but need a machine that covers more lawn, this is the robot for you.
The Husqvarna 450XH is a premium robot mower.
It costs nearly a full $1000 more than the 430X and has all the same features.
It is also very hard to get your hands on, at least through online retailers. For all these reasons we still suggest the 430X, but if you need a machine that covers more ground, definitely look into the 450XH.
We recommend using Husqvarna’s website to track down a local dealer if you absolutely must have the best robotic mower we could find.
One of the first points that every purchaser of a robot mower makes is just how much time it saves.
With the purchase of a robot mower, gone are the days of waking up to push a mower around, watching jealously as your partner plays with the kids indoors or around the pool.
You can have your weekends back; these robots make that possible.
We have a few favorites, which we’ll quickly summarize now.
Our “Best Budget” option was the Gardena R80Li, an affordable option that has some surprisingly great features, and high-quality performance.
The only downside to the Gardena R80Li was its tiny coverage area (only 0.173 acres), but if you’re looking for a robot vacuum for a smaller lawn, this is a fantastic option.
Also, it might be worth keeping an eye on Gardena’s new line of Sileno mowers! They are currently quite hard to order in North America, but that should change soon.
Next up, our “Best Value” robot mower was the incredible Husqvarna AM315.
At a very fair price point it offers everything you would expect from a new-gen robot device.
All the great features are a nice starting point, but what really makes this a great value buy is its coverage area. The AM315 can mow up to 0.4 acres, a respectable amount of coverage considering the robot’s cost.
We also really liked the quiet operation of this device!
Finally, our “Best Overall” pick was the Husqvarna 430X.
While it isn’t actually our favorite robot mower (that award goes to the Husqvarna 450XH), it combines an incredible coverage area (0.8 acres), GPS-assisted navigation, many other Husqvarna functions, and a great price point.
Another factor that played into our choosing the 430X as “Best Overall” is its ease of purchase, while the 450XH is very difficult to purchase through online sellers.
Additionally, the 450XH is basically the same device as the 430X, just with an increased coverage area.
But we can’t say enough good things about either device.
The advances made in the robot mower industry over the last few years has us excited for what’s to come.
But that doesn’t mean you should sit and wait, there are some great robot mowers available right now.
Regardless of which robot you decide is best for you, one thing has become evident – mowing the lawn can soon be a chore of the past.
Take your weekends back, let a robot mow your lawn for you!
