Weber 741001 Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill
About the Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill
For those that consider themselves lovers of all things BBQ, charcoal grills are generally recommended when it comes to superior taste.
For some reason that charcoal smoke just adds another dimension to meats, although a good propane grill can still cook up some incredible BBQ.
Still, for those that want that classic, smoky taste, a charcoal grill is time-tested and generally best.
Another thing that is time-tested is the Weber grill brand.
Weber is very well known in the barbequing world. And if you’ve ever purchased a barbeque before, I’m sure you’ve either considered, or purchased, a Weber grill.
This grill is insanely simple.
It is a classic Kettle grill, with a space for the charcoals directly underneath the cooking grill.
The porcelain-enameled lid and bowl retain heat and won’t chip or rust.
The cooking grate is made of plated steel and easy to clean.
And there is also a convenient lid hook so that you won’t have to place the lid on the ground while cooking.
The one-touch cleaning system makes ash cleanup incredibly simple, and the wheels make the grill very simple to move around.
Now the features are nice, but how does it cook?
Weber’s charcoal grills are generally very reliable, and this one is no different. You can expect an easy bbq’ing experience, and a great smoky taste every time.
Finally, regulating the heat of the grill is simple, and it is very easy to get a great fire going (especially if you use a chimney starter).
Charcoal barbeque’s are great for getting a smoky flavor into your meat, and the Weber Classic Kettle grill is a great, cheap option.
It is very simple to use and has no flaws that we can think of.
Its simplicity cannot be understated, and it might not be the best option for those that don’t want to start a fire every time they barbeque.
Additionally, it doesn’t have any side tables, so food preparation can be a bit of a hassle.
However, this is supposed to be a simple, budget option, and for the price this is a great grill.
Char-Griller E06614 AKORN Jr
About the AKORN Jr
One thing I’ve always noticed about barbeques is that, for a lot of people, they are just way too big and take up way too much space.
What if you want to bring it camping? Even with the prior Weber kettle grill, it will be a tough fit in most vehicles.
Introducing the AKORN Jr, made by Char-Griller.
Char-Griller makes all different types of bbq and smoker options, big and small.
But we chose this product to review specifically for its convenient, small size.
The AKORN Jr is made out of solid steel, and triple-walled to retain heat and ensure an even, perfect grill.
It has an easy-dump ash pan, as well as top and bottom air dampers for precise temperature control.
It has 153 square inches of grill space, which is definitely the smallest of any on this list, but again, this is a portable smaller grill that isn’t exactly meant to be a large quantity barbeque.
It also has two durable handles and 3 sturdy legs.
This barbeque performs admirably when it comes to ease of setup and is very quick to get nice and hot, ensuring a great grill.
It is important to note, if you are looking for a barbeque to handle a full summer of cooking for plenty of family and friends, this is not the grill for you.
That being said, we really like this grill.
This is the grill for the camper, the person that wants something quick and easy to transport and setup.
If you’re looking for something a little more heavy-duty, something to cook for a crowd, keep reading!
We still have one more charcoal grill option to review.
However, if you think the AKORN Jr is the grill for you, check out this unboxing and review video below:
KamadoJoe KJ23RHC Classic II Ceramic Charcoal Grill
About the KamadoJoe Charcoal Grill
When it comes to charcoal grills, there are some cheaper options, like those above, although cheaper doesn’t always mean bad.
This next grill definitely isn’t cheap, and it definitely isn’t bad.
If you’re looking for the premier charcoal grill, look no further.
KamadoJoe is one of the very best brands in the barbeque industry, and for good reason, they make a fantastic barbeque.
Many people love the Big Green Egg Kamado grills, but KamadoJoe has them beat in just about every regard with their Classic II Ceramic Charcoal Grill.
They’ve thought of everything here.
First things first, this grill functions about the same as other Kamado grills. Charcoal on the bottom, grills directly above.
You’ll have 406 square inches of cooking space, which is a decently large amount of space.
There is also a built-in thermometer, and a cooking temperature range of 225 to 750 degrees.
However, those are basic features, now for the really cool stuff.
The KamadoJoe has a slide-out ash drawer that is by far the most hassle-free and best designed we’ve seen.
The KamadoJoe also has a multi-level cooking rack system that allows for differing cooking temperatures at the same time, a unique feature for charcoal grills.
But our favourite feature by far has to be the Feathertouch Air Lift Hinge, which makes lifting the lid light enough to accomplish with one finger, and you can leave the lid in any open position you like. No more slamming, finger-catching lids!
Additionally, the KamadoJoe has 4 wheels, two side-racks, and an air-control vent.
Moving the barbeque is super simple, and your ability to regulate your temperature is incredibly versatile.
Finally, the grill also comes with a few tools, like an ash tool, and grill and grate gripper tool.
Now for the downside, this barbeque is amazing, and they must know it because it is expensive.
It is very well-built and comes with so many features that help to justify the large price.
Still, with a price upwards of $1000, it can definitely be daunting.
However, there is legitimately not one flaw with this barbeque, so if you are a true barbeque lover, and you want one of the best cooking experiences out there, this is bar-none our favourite charcoal grill on the market.
Char-Broil Classic 360 3-Burner Liquid Propane Gas Grill
About the Char-Broil Classic 360 Propane Grill
We recognize that charcoal grills aren’t for everybody.
Getting charcoal lit and hot can be time-consuming, and not everyone wants to work for their barbeque, especially at the end of a long day.
A propane barbeque will not give the same smoky taste, but when it comes to ease and reliability, propane is generaly the way to go.
Char-Broil is well known for just that, easy, simple barbeque at a great price.
The Classic 360 3-Burner Propane Grill is par-for-the-course.
It’s a no frills, simple propane barbeque that will get the job done at a great price point.
The grill comes equipped with a typical porcelain-coated steel lid and grills for weather and heat resistance.
The grill is about 360 square inches, with an additional 170 square inch swing-a-way rack for warming.
The burners are stainless steel and starting the grill is as simple as pressing a button thanks to the Piezo ignition start up.
The grill also has two wheels, and two metal side shelves, so moving the grill, and food prep is very simple.
When it comes to cooking performance, the Char-Broil is mediocre, but that’s not necessarily bad considering what price the barbeque retails at.
Overall, the Char-Broil is a simple solution for those looking for a barbeque.
No fancy features, average-to-good build quality, and mediocre cooking quality.
However, if you just want a super affordable barbeque that can be fired up in an instant, and grilling meats and vegetables with incredible ease, this is not a bad option.
Char-Broil Performance 300 2-Burner Cabinet Liquid Propane Grill
About the Char-Broil Performance 300 Propane Grill
Char-Broil features again on this list, but the Performance 300 couldn’t be further from the prior Classic 360 grill.
This grill looks incredible.
While the prior Classic 360 was aimed at those that want a basic, functional grill, this Performance 300 is better suited for those that want a grill that cooks and looks great.
The Performance 300 comes equipped with a stainless-steel lid, while the rest of the grill is made of either stainless-steel, porcelain-coated cast iron or painted steel.
This grill is built to last.
There is about 300 square feet of cooking space and an additional 100 square inches on the swing-away warming rack. That should be ample room to cook plenty of food, up to 16 burgers on the main grill alone.
Some features we really loved with the Char-Broil Performance 300 were the metal side racks and cabinet.
This means food prep can all be done right at the barbeque, and the propane tank will be hidden from sight, with a little bit of extra room to store barbeque tools.
There is a lid-mounted temperature gauge, as well as electronic ignition and a removable grease pan. This means you won’t be missing out on any of the features that most people look for in a barbeque these days.
Additionally, the barbeque sits on 4 wheels, two of which can lock. So, while the barbeque is incredibly portable it remains very stable.
The Char-Broil Performance 300 isn’t a huge grill (though there are bigger options of this style available here).
However, if you love to cook on the barbeque, but don’t exactly need a huge grill, this is the perfect option for you.
This grill is exceptionally easy to set up and use, and comes with an incredible build quality, great temperature control, and super useful shelves and a cabinet.
The cooking quality you can expect from this grill is definitely on the higher end of gas grill performance, thanks in large part to the stainless-steel lid and the porcelain-coated iron grates.
Finally, at this price point, you are getting an incredible, albeit small, grill, that can be relied upon for many summers of delicious barbeque. This is our “Best Value” outdoor grill!
Watch the video below for a quick summary of what the Char-Broil Performance 300 offers!
Weber 45010001 Black Spirit II E-310 Gas Grill
About the Weber Black Spirit II Gas Grill
This list would not be complete without a look at one of Weber’s higher end offerings, and the Black Spirit II is the perfect grill to finish with.
The Black Spirit II is everything that you expect a costly, deluxe barbeque to be.
While we do love the design of the Char-Broil Performance 300, we also love the way the Black Spirit II looks, and when it comes down to it, they are both barbeques that you can be proud to display in any backyard.
The slight edge might go to the Weber Spirit II, thanks to its different color options, sturdy build, and general design.
Speaking of the design, the Weber Spirit II has an open cart design, which gives a huge amount of storage space for cooking utensils.
There are also six tool hooks, making organization even easier!
The porcelain-enameled cast iron cooking grates are reversible for different size sear lines on different kinds of food (thinner for fish, thicker for steaks, etc.)
This Weber grill also boasts the GS4 grilling system which consists of easy electric ignition, consistent burner tubes, flavorizer bars which catch grease and oil to provide smoky flavor, and a grease management system for any excess drippings.
Additional handy features include: a folding side table, easy access propane tank, and a fuel gauge for the tank.
Finally, the grill has a whopping 529 square inches of cooking space total, meaning this is one of the very best grills on this list for those that cook in large quantities.
Weber is one of the premier brands in the barbeque world for a reason, and the Spirit II does not let down.
It is definitely expensive, costing nearly twice as much as our “Best Value” option, the Char-Broil Performance 300.
However, this grill really sets itself apart when it comes to cooking quality, the ease that it brings to any cooking process, and the general build and look of the barbeque.
This is, without a doubt, our “Best Overall” outdoor grill, and what’s even better, it comes with a 10-year warranty, ensuring that this grill will keep you, your friends, and your family, well fed for many summers to come!
Barbeque can be one of those things that brings family and friends together.
The smell of meat smoking, the sound of a steak searing, and the first juicy bite into a perfectly cooked hot dog or sausage, define some of the greatest weekends and weeknights of summer.
But there is nothing worse than a grill that won’t cooperate.
Thankfully, we looked at some of the most popular grills out there. Surprisingly, most of them actually performed quite well, and offered tons of great features and qualities, however, there were a few favourites.
We looked at both charcoal and propane grills, and there were reasons to love every grill we looked at.
The Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill was a great entry point for the list.
And while it can be a lot of work to start, and maintain, a fire for a charcoal grill, but the smoke from the charcoal will add another dimension to the food you cook.
The Weber Kettle grill offers a small, functional barbeque for a great price.
While it’s not the flashiest (or easiest to use) choice, it definitely is the “Best Budget Pick”.
If you absolutely must have a charcoal barbeque then there is a premium option available, but it’ll cost you.
The KamadoJoe Classic II Ceramic Charcoal Grill is an incredibly expensive option, but it is definitely incredible.
Much like the Big Green Egg we all know, the KamadoJoe is an egg-shaped charcoal grill.
Costing upwards of $1000 it ain’t cheap, but it also comes packed with great intuitive features, and you can rely on this grill 100% to meet all of your grilling needs.
This is definitely the “Best Charcoal Grill” on the market.
We also looked at some propane grills, and while Char-Broil has a budget option that we liked, the true value was found in the Char-Broil Performance 300 2-Burner propane grill.
The Char-Broil Performance 300 has a great look, and if you are in need of a smaller barbeque that offers great performance, and an outstanding build quality, then this is the barbeque for you.
This barbeque was definitely our “Best Value” barbeque.
Following the Performance 300, we looked at the Weber Spirit II, and we fell in love.
This is a grill that offers everything and can be relied upon for cookouts large and small.
If you’re a bbq enthusiast, and you need the best tool for the job, the Weber Spirit II was our “Best Overall Outdoor Grill”.
Hopefully your summer will be filled with tons of perfectly cooked barbeque, thanks to one of the great products we looked at here.
A final note: Most of these barbeques can also be found in various sizes on the manufacturer’s websites, so if you love one model in particular, but find it too large or small, it is worth exploring if the model comes in different sizes!
