While Summer brings plenty of great weather and great times, it also brings with it the dreaded task of lawn maintenance.
Tackling the never-ending battle against an unkempt yard can be difficult, especially if you don’t have the right tools.
Push mowers can be more work than their worth, and gas mowers leave you reeking of fumes with ears buzzing from the loud noise.
Luckily, electric mowers are constantly evolving, and we’ve compiled some of the very best options for the job, both corded and cordless.

Sun Joe MJ401E-PRO Electric Lawn Mower
About the Sun Joe Mower
The first electric mower we’ll take a look at is the Sun Joe PRO Electric Lawn Mower, from the Snow Joe company’s summer line of devices.
This is a simple, and therefore very affordable, lawn mower.
But the 14-inch deck, 13-amp motor Sun Joe is by no means going to blow you away with its performance.
It has adjustable deck heights which is always a great feature for a mower to have.
And the Sun Joe comes with a side-discharge chute attachment, as well as a 10.6-gallon bag for trimmings.
However, the trimmings bag is relatively cheap, and thus should be emptied prior to being filled excessively.
Now this is unfortunately a corded mower, which has benefits and negatives.
While batteries can corrode and need to be replaced every few years, a cord can easily be chewed up by a mower.
So, while it offers more reliable performance than a cordless mower, you will have to remain vigilant so as not to run over the cord, rendering it useless.
Finally, the build seems relatively cheap, and the performance is by no means great.
This is a relatively popular product on Amazon, and many recommend it as a great budget choice.
But we’ve looked at some of the other options, and we would recommend going with one of the products further down on this list.
Many complain about the mower not starting up relatively early into its lifespan, and others complain about very poor performance.
While the Sun Joe isn’t terrible, it isn’t great either. And for the same, or similar, cost, there are much better options out there!
- Adjustable deck heights
- Very affordable
- Corded mowers often result in chewed up cords (expensive to replace, must remain cautious while mowing)
- Cheap build
- Below average performance
- Potential it won’t start
Earthwise 14-Inch Corded Electric Lawn Mower
About the Earthwise Mower
The second entry on this list is the wonderful, and affordable, Earthwise 14-Inch Corded Lawn Mower.
Earthwise is an offshoot of the American Lawn Mower Company, and their 14-inch corded lawn mower is a great choice for those looking for a smaller option to keep their yard in check.
The Earthwise, similar to the Sun Joe, has a 14-Inch mower deck. While that is not too small, it does make it less advisable for bigger yards.
The deck height can be adjusted via single lever, from as low as 1.5” up to a maximum of 4”.
An additional feature that we love at this price point is the 2-in-1 side discharge and mulching system which actually works quite well.
As was the case with the Sun Joe mower, this is a corded mower.
However, there is a cord retention hook that can keep the cord secure while the machine is in operation.
The comfortable ‘V’ handle is cushioned for a solid grip and has a simple push to start button.
The frame is also very lightweight and folds for easy storage.
Overall, at a great price point, the Earthwise 14-Inch Corded Mower delivers!
It has solid performance, is incredibly maneuverable and lightweight, and a mediocre (but passable) build quality.
There are no serious complaints to note with regard to this machine, which is quite rare when you are bargain shopping for more complex electronics like a mower!
The 14-inch frame means it will take a little longer to cut larger yards, however, if you have a smaller yard, this is definitely the “Best Budget” electric lawn mower!
- Deck height adjustment
- VERY affordable
- 2-in-1 side-discharge and mulching
- Corded mower
- Only a 14-inch mowing deck
- Mediocre build quality
Greenworks 12 Amp Corded Lawn Mower
About the Greenworks Corded Mower
Greenworks has done a great job with their 12-amp corded mower, so well that it actually featured as our Best Budget Pick on another list on Meccano Home.
You may be wondering how the Earthwise Mower beat out the Greenworks for “Best Budget Pick” this time around.
The answer is simple – The Earthwise mower is about $50 cheaper!
However, even though the Greenworks is not our best budget pick on this list, it is still a mower we can seriously recommend!
The Greenworks 12 Amp Corded Mower is a seriously useful mower at a seriously good price.
It powers on with a simple push button.
Additionally, the mower gives the user the flexibility to mulch, side discharge, or discharge into a rear bag.
The Greenworks also has seven height adjustments for the deck.
The Greenworks Mower is built out of steel and runs well. At such an affordable price point it is rare to get a quality piece of equipment, but the Greenworks is just that.
The Greenworks Mower is a reliable, well-built option, and is even one of our favorites.
For a more in-depth look at this mower, the prior mower article can be found here.
- Steel deck (feels sturdy)
- Good performance for price point
- Mulching, side discharge and rear bag
- 7 height settings
- Corded mower
Black+Decker BEMW482BH Electric Lawn Mower
About the Black+Decker Mower
Black+Decker is an extremely well-known brand, counted on for their reliable, affordable products.
The Black+Decker 12-amp, 17-inch mower is a great option for just about any mowing need.
The Black+Decker mower is designed in a similar color scheme and build to other Black+Decker products.
That means you can expect a comfortable, functional device.
There are rugged wheel treads for improved handling in thick grass, and the machine is lightweight and easily maneuverable!
An interesting option is also the potential to upgrade your device to the Black+Decker Pivot Control Handle, although the basic mower is already very simple to maneuver around your yard.
As is the case with most electric mowers, there is also a push button start.
Additional features we liked were the winged mower blades for 30% better clipping collection into the clippings bag, and there are also six different height adjustments available!
The general build and performance of this machine are, as expected from Black+Decker, quite good.
At a decent price, this is definitely a safe choice.
Black+Decker warranties are generally pretty good, so the potential replacement of a dysfunctional unit isn’t as daunting.
We would have liked to have seen more than a simple bagging capability for clippings, many cheaper mowers have at least a mulching capability.
The Black+Decker is a reliable lawnmowing option, but it won’t blow you away with performance. We can say that the build quality is more reliable than most of the cheaper options.
The Black+Decker Electric Lawn Mower is also a corded option, so it doesn’t set itself apart from competition in that regard, although we must admit that if you simply want to bag and discard your lawn trimmings this is potentially the best option available.
So, if you want a safe, reliable option, this might just be the mower for you.
- Reliable, good build
- Great for those that want to cut, collect clippings
- Easy to use
- Corded mower
- Not as many features as other options
- No mulching capability
Worx Cordless Lawn Mower
About the Worx Cordless Mower
Worx is one of those brands that comes to mind for garden and lawn care, and that’s due to a history of proving reliable and useful to handy men and women everywhere.
This Worx Cordless Mower is no exception, winning the title of our “Best Value Lawn Mower for a Small Yard” in a previous article!
Similar to the Greenworks, the Worx can both mulch and bag its trimmings (although there is no side discharge). It also has 3 trimming heights, which while less than the Greenworks, still allows for some level of flexible grass heights.
The Worx Cordless Mower employs 2 20V batteries to provide a total of 40V of power. Additionally, the Worx comes with a Dual Port Charger and battery power level indicators.
(Worx 20V batteries are also removable and usable in other Worx Lawn and Garden products).
Overall, the Worx cordless is a relatively reliable and useful mower at an affordable price and, again, wins our pick for “Best Value Electric Mower”.
For those looking for more info on this mower, it features in another article on the site, which can be found here.
- 2 20V batteries that also work in other Worx devices
- Best value performance to price
- Batteries can be faulty and need replacement
- No steel mower deck
- Small deck (can be a pro if you are looking for smaller agile mower)
EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower
About the EGO Power+
Once again, we’re looking at another previously reviewed mower. The Canadian Brand IGoCordless has created a lawn mower that gives users a little bit of customization when it comes to the battery kit going into the unit.
The battery kit and charger are sold separately, and there are 4.0, 5.0, and 7.5 Ah 56-Volt Lithium Ion battery kits available.
The EGO Power+ also has very adjustable handle, and deck height, making it easy to store, and effortless to operate and maneuver.
Similar to the Greenworks, the EGO Power+ has 3-in-1 mulching, bagging, and side discharge.
This mower also comes equipped with LED headlights.
As this mower is not an editor’s choice, we will not be going too in-depth here.
Again, more info can be found in the previous Meccano Home article.
- Multiple battery options
- Hidden cost of battery and charger
- No steel mower deck
- Poor customer service
Snapper XD 82V MAX Electric Cordless 21-Inch Lawnmower
About the Snapper XD Mower
Our final entry on the list is the Snapper XD 82V MAX Cordless Lawnmower.
Snapper is a brand that creates mowing and gardening tools, and although they may not have as much name recognition as some of the others on this list, they definitely have a product worth looking at.
The Snapper XD Mower is a feature-heavy, strong performance mower at an expensive price.
The Snapper comes with two 2-Ah batteries, that can provide up to 45 minutes of operation each.
The mower has a 21” steel deck, the largest of any on this list.
The mower also has 3-in-1 capabilities, allowing for mulching, side-discharge, and bagging into the large 1.6L bag.
One cool feature is the load sensing technology that will automatically adjust power to meet the needs of the blades.
There is a push button start, single lever 7-position height adjustment, and the mower also folds for easy storage.
For only a slightly higher price there is also a self-propelled option, something that is usually exclusive to gas powered mowers.
The Snapper is a high-quality build, and its performance is the very best of any mower we looked at.
The Snapper XD MAX Cordless Electric Lawn Mower is an incredible mower, but it will cost you.
This is much more expensive than any other mower on this list, except maybe the EGO Power+, but it also provides so much more than any other mower on this list.
This 82V cordless mower can definitely tackle even the most overgrown yard.
This mower’s steel deck is rare in the electric mower industry, and it points to an attention to detail and a focus on build quality.
Additionally, the 2Ah batteries that provide the 82V of power are also usable in any Snapper tool or appliance!
We loved this mower, and when it comes to electric mowers it ranked at the very top of our list. The mower comes packed with great features that we loved, and in general, it just works.
This is, easily, the best looking, best performing, and “Best Overall” electric mower on the market!
- Multiple battery options
- Best performance of any electric mower
- Steel mower deck
- Batteries work in other Snapper electronics
- Many great features
- Hidden cost of battery and charger
Summer is pretty much here, and keeping a manicured lawn isn’t just about keeping neighbors impressed, but also giving you the peace of mind that a fresh-cut lawn provides.
Keeping a great looking lawn is a sure way to improve your summer… Nobody wants to live on an overgrown, weedy piece of land!
Having the right tools can make a somewhat monotonous, boring chore so much easier.
If you’re looking for a cheaper, budget electric lawn mower, we suggest the Earthwise 50214 14-Inch 8-Amp Side Discharge/Mulching Corded Electric Lawn Mower, our “Best Budget Pick”.
This mower, at this price, is a definite bargain. The mulching ability is pretty rare at this price, and the other features of the Earthwise make it a great, low-cost option.
This is definitely a cheaper feeling mower. So, if you want many reliable years out of your mower, you might be better served with a different option from our list.
(The Greenworks Mower is another solid budget pick).
For example, the “safe” product buyer might feel more comfortable spending a little bit more on their lawn mower. Look no further than our “Best Value Pick” – the Worx WG779 40V Cordless Lawn Mower.
Worx is one of those reliable brands that will give you a machine that accomplishes what you need, but not much more.
Another option we like is the Black+Decker BEMW482BH that featured on this list, as ot is a similar style and build quality to the Worx.
You can’t go wrong with either of these mowers, but the Worx mower is still our favorite of the two.
While the Worx and the Black+Decker mowers are great, safe options, neither are our absolute favorite mowers on the market.
For that, you’ll have to look at the Snapper XD 82V MAX Electric Cordless 21-Inch Lawnmower, our “Best Overall” electric mower.
The Snapper is the very best electric mower we looked at.
It is packed with features, cordless, and it will make short work of even the wildest looking yards.
The Snapper XD Max is also the most expensive mower we looked at, so while it is definitely the best option, the price will be restrictive for some.
However, despite the large cost, it is still the very best electric mower on the market, and our personal favorite.
NOTE: A worthwhile addition to this article would be to point out that electric mowers, and their batteries, don’t do well when stored in extremely cold conditions. This means you might have to find room for them in a warm closet, or a heated garage.
